Trained by father Subramanyam and vocal maestros R.K. Srikantan and Palghat K.V. Purbayan Chatterjee has learnt Sitar from his his father Pandit Parthapratim Chatterjee- disciple of Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. His music combines the tone and richness of the Nikhil Banerjee style.and a contemporary touch of his own urbane style. Purbayan is also a vocalist in his own right.
