Thyagaraja Aradhana Celebration -SRUTI

SRUTI, The India Music and Dance Society, celebrated the annual Thyagaraja Aradhana music festival on March 6th at Villanova University, Villanova, PA. It was an all day event attended by about 270 people. More than 90 people, young and old, rendered compositions of Saint Thyagaraja vocally or on instruments. The celebrations concluded with a main concert by Prof. Subbulekshmi and her daughter Kalyani Ramani. They were accompanied by Radhika Mani on Violin and Suresh Ramachandran on Mridangam.

This year, the Thyagaraja Aradhana celebrations started early at 8:30 a.m. with a procession led by a devotee (Sri Kanumalla Pattabhiramamoorthy) dressed up as Saint Thyagaraja and carrying Sri Rama's portrait followed by many youngsters and adults singing Utsava Sampradaya Keerthanas. The procession was introduced as a new concept this year and was well received by the audience. Then came the group rendering of the Pancharathna Kritis, five of Saint Thyagaraja's greatest compositions. This was followed by individual participation by children, youth and adults. This year saw a record number of participants; close to 65 children/youngsters and 30 adults. The quality of the renderings was high and demonstrated the large pool of musical talent present in the Delaware Valley.

SRUTI provided free catered lunch for everyone present.

The audience left with a very fulfilled day of music, food, devotion, enthusiasm and reverence to the great Saint Thyagaraja.
