Shoba Sharma: began studying Bharatanatyam at the age of four in Madras, India. Her early training in music and dance culminated in a Government of India scholarship to study under the Dhananjayans in Madras. Shoba's acclaimed dance career includes performance at prestigious centers in India (such as the Music Academy, Krishna Gana Sabha and NCPA) and several coveted awards. Upon her arrival in the U.S. in 1986, she continued her work as an ambassador of India's cultural heritage. Her experience includes leading a wide range of workshops and collaborations in creative education projects. As a performer Shoba has toured around the U.S. with appearance at the Lincoln Center, World Music Institute, HACC, International House and University of Pennsylvania. She has been awarded several prestigious awards, including the Pa. Council on the Arts Dance fellowship and Dance Advance award (from the Pew Charitable trust, administered by the Phila. Dance Alliance).

In addition to her performance and creative work, Shoba is an acclaimed teacher. As a faculty member of Bryn Mawr College's dance department, Shoba offered an introductory course to Bharatanatyam to an enthusiastic student community. In 1991, she founded NATYA Academy of Indian Classical Dance in Philadelphia. Several students of Natya, have won Apprenticeship Awards from the Pa. Council on the Arts. Shoba and the NATYA ensemble have distinguished themselves in the Delaware Valley by their strong adherence to tradition and excellence.
